All about blood counts and gratitude

Written by Lorelei Decker

Today we went to have lab work done and met with Dr. Geister. As expected, my blood counts (white blood cells) are pretty low. They're showing at 1.4 (normal is 4.0-11.0) even after a full shot of Neulasta. RICE chemo is notorious for depleting blood counts. It's a monster of a chemo. Experiencing it, I understand why my counts are low. Anywho, we're going to go back to Dr. Geister Monday morning to check my blood counts again. If they're higher, he'll send me to receive the next round of chemo. If they're around where they are now we'll have to delay chemo until my counts come up.

As for now, I'm feeling fine. The nausea has subsided and I have no back pain today (praise the Lord, please continue to pray for no back pain). I'm going to pack up my things and head to Tahlequah to see Bradley. I need a break. Also, your body really does respond to the state of your mind. So hopefully this boost to my spirits will also be a boost to my counts!!

I have days where I am frustrated that I'm still dealing with cancer.. But I continue to pray for a humbled and grateful spirit and the Lord answers! Today he used my doctor to share the message "I couldn't start getting better until I stopped focusing on what I had lost and started focusing on what I had left." Amen!! I am so grateful to have the health and strength to get to go see Bradley for a weekend. I am grateful for another birthday. Grateful for treatment (that one is sometimes hard to swallow) and grateful for hope through Jesus Christ our Lord!!

As far as stem cell transplant goes, we don't have many concrete details yet. In the cancer world, as it should be in all of the world, we take things one step at a time. So we're gonna get through this round of RICE chemo and in about four weeks I should meet back with the SCT oncologist.

Thank you so much for this post, Darlin...all of your loving & loyal friends and family are following closely and continuing our prayers for you. I'm so glad that you get to see Bradley this weekend...please give him my best wishes for a quick healing from his injury. My guess is that both of you will benefit from this visit more than anything. Love is a magic potion. And your mom tells me that you also get to go to the premier...such great news! This will be the best birthday ever! I love you!!! See you soon. Mahmoo

You continue to have an amazing spirit, Lorelei. You may never totally realize the impact that has had on others. So sorry you're going through all of this, but so grateful the Lord has, as is, using you through all of this to bring glory to Himself. Heading to Mexico Friday - I'll tell everyone hello for you. I know they've been praying for you!

Psalm 91:14-16

New International Version (NIV)

14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."
