Sharing Lessons Learned with OKC's chapter of Women in Communications

Today Lorelei and I will share our story of lessons learned at the monthly meeting of the Oklahoma City chapter of the Association for Women in Communications.

Here are some of the talking points:

  • Everyone has something. Don't complain. Be gracious when others do. (Hair too silky to stay in a ponytail.)
  • Everyone has a cure. Respond privately. Understand their true motives. (Essential oils, sugar, microwave, tea)
  • Allow people to be on your team. "I hope you are able to help me. This is what I need..." (Nurses or staff at insurance companies)
  • People engage when you ask a question or give a call to action. (Blood drives or send a photo)
  • People in media are your friends. Help them tell the story. (Rachel Calderon)
  • Everyone unites behind a common enemy. (#ApproveLorelei)
  • If you put a photo out there people will use it. (Even the Huff.)
  • Train people to subscribe to a central place for info. (Everyone wants to connect individually but you don't have time no matter how close they are to you.)
  • Shorter posts get reposted. Photos always get more traffic.
  • Brutally honest photos of you looking your worst get the most reposts.
  • Never google cancer! Happy, healthy people rarely post to the internet.
  • You'll run into someone who wants a photo or an autograph every time you go to the grocery store. Always take your wig.
  • Don't make anyone search for anything--always provide a link. Always make that link open in a new window.
  • Blondes get interest; brunettes get help.
  • Never open your Cracker Jacks on a plane with Scott Brooks.
  • Trying to explain Twitter to a famous person over 40 is impossible.
  • Always answer your phone. (It might be CNN or Russell Westbrook.) But don't post the number. Post a form to allow for contact requests.
  • Register to be a bone marrow match--you may be someone's last hope.
  • Even if you've been a keynote speaker for thousands of people multiple times you'll still be required to take Speech to get your communications degree.

Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have
any issues with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up
losing a few months of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any methods to prevent hackers?

Psalm 91:14-16

New International Version (NIV)

14 “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation."
